Winter is a pretty magical time of year in Northeast Ohio. 

We celebrate the change in the weather as the warmth of the previous seasons recedes, leaving us with colder days and nights. The landscape changes with the temperatures and we can get lovely drifts of snow and glittering icicles. 

The changing seasons also give us a chance to reflect. 

When we look back on how far we’ve come and what we’ve accomplished this year, a lot of words come to mind. 

Challenging and fulfilling are two, but one word stands out above the rest: Grateful. We are truly grateful and honored to have you, our customers, in our lives. 

One of the ways we express our gratitude and give back is by helping families within our communities through the GreenCare for Troops program.

Turf Pride Lawn Care Gives Back Through GreenCare For Troops

We are proud to partner with Project Evergreen’s GreenCare for Troops, an award-winning program that provides free lawn care and landscape services to families of currently deployed military personnel.

Lawns and landscapes create a beautiful place for families to play and connect. It also positively contributes to the relationships in the lives of everyone involved. Our goal is to help reduce stress and give military families a worry-free lawn during their deployment.

Here, we’ll learn more about  how a lawn care company gives back through the program.

What is GreenCare For Troops?

GreenCare For Troops is a need-based program for active-duty deployed service members. This includes all military branches as well as Guard and Reserve Forces. 

Project EverGreen’s GreenCare for Troops connects military families across the nation to complimentary lawn and landscape services to help ease their stress and worries about projects that need done at home. There is also SnowCare for Troops that provides basic snow removal to military families. 

The National Association of Landscape Professionals endorses GreenCare for Troops so a lawn care company can give back.

Who does GreenCare for Troops help?

We can't even begin to imagine all the stress and sadness involved in having a loved one be deployed overseas – especially a mom or dad who is left to take care of all of the household responsibilities on top of taking care of children and pets.

GreenCare For Troops is for actively deployed military families who have a service member away from the home creating a financial or physical burden on those left behind to obtain or complete lawn, landscape, and snow removal services.

If Turf Pride Lawn Care can take one thing off of their plates to help them, it makes us happy. 

Why Green Spaces Are Important for Military Families

Parks, lawns, landscapes and maintained green spaces help to mitigate temperature increase in communities and significantly reduce energy use and cooling costs. Project EverGreen’s initiatives – GreenCare for Troops and GreenCare for Communities – have made a significant impact to help this, enabling lawn care companies to give back. 

Through its nationwide base of professional volunteers like Turf Pride, Project EverGreen has connected people, plants, and their communities to maximize the health of grass, plants, and trees, which in turn sequesters carbon and cleans the air. Both initiatives support healthy green spaces in neighborhoods and cities, enabling maintained green spaces to function as the lungs of the city and offsetting the negative effects of a warming environment.

A single group or individual cannot transform lawns, landscapes, and parks but Project EverGreen’s coalition of businesses and individuals helps maintain green spaces across the country, including in Northeast Ohio, so they can thrive.

How Did Turf Pride Get Involved in GreenCare For Troops?

Turf Pride Lawn Care started working with GreenCare For Troops in 2006, the year it began.

Personally, we have family members and employees who have served in the military, and we know how difficult it is for them to have been away from their families. We know they give their all to help protect our country, and helping care for their lawns is the least we can do for them. 

We will take on pretty much any family in our area that is in need of our services. We inform our lawn specialists that they will have a property to treat. At the time of applications, we have them make sure things look OK on the property. 

All of our lawn specialists may have a stop or two that is a “GreenCare For Troops” lawn. We help families that are within our communities that we already service, making it easy for our lawn specialists to add these stops to their days. 

We also worked on a project at Helen Simpson Park in Cleveland, Ohio. 

We know how important community parks and green spaces are to our mental and environmental health.  We were very excited to be a part of revitalizing this park and hope we can do more in the future. We are paired up with other companies in the area, and it's a team effort. There are local garden clubs in the area that help keep up with the plants in the area. 

In 2023, we even became GreenCare For Troops business spokespeople, trying to spread the word to any landscapers we work with to get them involved with this program to offer mowing, snow removal, etc.

Why Does Turf Pride Lawn Care Dedicate Their Time and Resources to GreenCare For Troops?

We believe creating healthy greenspaces for communities to enjoy elevates moods, reduces anxiety, and gives children safe places to play outside. Enjoying the great outdoors is more important now than ever.
